WEEKLY RULES REVIEW!
Let's talk about what happens when a player exposes a card or cards according to Rule 4)b)ix)(2) of the Misfits Rules and Tournament Information.
This is what happened:
Player A was the short stack in the small blind and Player B had Player A covered and was in the big blind. All seats except Player A & B folded to the blinds. Player A called the big blind with Ah 6h and Player B checked their big blind. Flop come A-J-rag. Player A shoves all-in with top pair. Player B lays down his cards and exposes J-J for a set, then says “not sure what I should do here……I call”. The Dealer immediately called “dead hand”. Player B then objected, so the Dealer consulted the Tournament Host. The Tournament Host was explained the play, and over-ruled the Dealers call of "dead hand”.
Here's the rule as it is written:
MPL Rules and Tournament Information, Rule 4)b)ix)(2):
(2) Exposing Cards and Proper Folding: (TDA Rule 68)
(a) Any exposure, deemed intentional, of one or both of a player’s cards, by the player, with action still on the table, will result in that hand being dead. This includes asking a player to “pick-a-card” at any time during the hand.
(b) If a hand is unintentionally exposed, that hand will remain tabled and live for the remainder of the hand or until the player folds.
(c) Once the hand is complete, players may decide to muck face down, show one or both of their cards. This is completely at the player's discretion and shall not be influenced by any other player.
(d) Penalties will be given accordingly when these rules are broken.
Here's the interpretation:
While Player B's action of exposing their hand was intentional, the question then becomes was the action designed to influence action on the table.
In part (a) above it states "Any exposure, deemed intentional, of one or both of a player’s cards, by the player, with action still on the table, will result in that hand being dead."
The key phrase here is "with action still on the table,...". Player A and B were the only two players in the hand and Player A had already closed their action by going All-In. Because there was no action left on the table other than Player B's, it was determined that the exposure of their cards did not influence or undermine the integrity of the game. This is exactly why the Tournament Host over-ruled the Dealer in the call of Player B's hand being dead and play was allowed to continue. If a player exposes their cards in this kind of situation and proceeds to try and get a "read" or angle on the All-In player, that will be deemed a dead hand. This was clearly not a case of angling.
On another note, we as players need to remember this rule and always think twice before intentionally exposing our cards. No two situations are alike and we must be prepared to face whatever decision is made regarding our actions. Even the decisions that go against us.
This is EXACTLY how the system is supposed to work. Player A disagreed with the call on the table and asked for the Floor, Player B was respectful of the decision in the moment and accepted the final result, however, they took the time to email me at lance@misfitspoker.com because they wanted further clarification on the rule. I then checked in with the dealers and we discussed it and used it as an opportunity to learn and grow. I also reach back out to the players that email me and explain what happened and why the decisions were made the way they were.
No one is perfect, the players, the Dealers, the Tournament Hosts, and yes, contrary to popular belief, even myself will make mistakes. The key is communication. If we all stay respectful and can understand that this is a game of FREE POKER, where NONE OF US have anything truly at stake in these little moments, things can get resolved and we can all become better from it. Hope this helps.
Thanks Everyone!

The Tournament Dealer Association (TDA) rules will apply in most cases. Please keep in mind TDA is a guideline for poker rooms to use and always respect rule #1 which states the following: “The best interest of the game and fairness are top priorities in decision-making. Unusual circumstances occasionally dictate that common sense decisions in the interest of fairness take priority over technical rules. Floor decisions are final.” To further familiarize yourself with the TDA Rules please visit: https://www.pokertda.com/poker-tda-rules/
